A semicolon is a punctuation mark indicating a pause, typically between two main clauses. It is more pronounced and has a pause slightly longer than a comma. A semicolon can be used instead of a coordinating conjunction to join two related independent clauses. A semicolon can also be used with a conjunctive adverb to connect sentences. A semicolon can separate units of a series when one or more of the units contain commas. Our semicolon worksheets address a variety of grade levels.
