Verbs Grammar Skill

Verbs are words that show action or state of being. They tell what a subject does, what happens in a sentence, or what condition a subject is in.

For example, in the sentence β€œThe dog ran across the yard,” the verb ran shows action. In the sentence β€œThe dog is tired,” the verb is shows a state of being.

Because every complete sentence needs a verb, understanding how verbs work is essential for reading comprehension, sentence writing, and clear communication.

Students begin learning verbs by identifying simple action words such as run, jump, and eat. As they progress, they learn about verb tenses, helping verbs, and how verbs change to show time.

Examples of Verbs in Sentences

Verbs show what a subject does or what state it is in. Here are examples of verbs in everyday sentences:

  • Action Verbs: The children played at the park.
  • Action Verbs: She writes in her journal every day.
  • State of Being Verbs: The sky is very blue today.
  • Helping Verbs: He was running late for class.
  • Future Actions: They will travel to the museum tomorrow.

In each sentence, the bolded verb tells you what the subject is doing or what state it is in. Recognizing verbs helps students understand sentence structure and meaning.

This grammar skills hub explains how verbs function, the different types of verbs students encounter, and how verb usage affects meaning in sentences.
